dinner 19th september 2009

Neighbours Bev and Malcolm, John and Jill missed elder daughter BG's birthday party as they were away on holiday. So we had an evening together before elder daughter BG moved on to pastures new. All seasoned chilli eaters apart from Margaret and Bill both in their seventies.

In days bygone (until about two years ago), I remember staying up all hours of the night making the little crispy puffs known as gol gappas or puchka or puri - numerous attempts to get them right - those puffed up little balloons - with various combinations of flour to semolina ratio or urad daal flour, ground in a coffee grinder. Heaven nowadays when it comes to those tiddly puffs of pastry = they are now available widely in many ethnic shops and the sleepless hard toil nights have disappeared - vamoosh!!! and they are long life too.

Some of the drudgery but also excitement of cooking from scratch has been eliminated. But I still prefer to soak and boil the chickpeas - it does not take long provided some advance planning has been adhered to. Assume each person will eat at least six of those little puffs and one cannot go wrong on quantity. Guess the rest of the melange is all about estimating and hoping that there is enough for all! leftover bits are useful the next day for a tiny snack.
